Diarrhea – While it may be the opposite of constipation, diarrhea is also one of the causes of hemorrhoids. The frequent bowel movement in diarrhea stresses the colon as well. To avoid diarrhea, make sure that the water you drink and the food you eat are clean, and the food utensils you use are sterilized.
Inadequate fiber intake – Fiber is a substance that does not contain any nutrients; however, it is a required part of the human diet. Fiber helps soften the stool, preventing it from hardening on to the colon walls and making it easier for stool to pass through the rectum. The substance is a structural material of plants so it is abundant in fruits and vegetables. The recommended daily intake of fiber in the diet is 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men. This is the equivalent to 7 to 8 servings of fruits or vegetables incorporated in the diet daily.
Low water consumption – Five to eight glasses of water per day help to keep the cells hydrated as well as to flush out the toxins in the body. While inadequate fiber may cause stools to harden, low water consumption may slow down bowel movement, requiring greater effort and pressure for the stool to pass. Aside from keeping yourself hydrated, it is also recommended to avoid caffeine and alcohol as drinking these promotes urination.
Incorrect or inadequate exercise – Incorrect exercise may be in the form of lifting weights for a long time, putting pressure on the colon. Lack of exercise is not really a cause of hemorrhoids, but it may contribute in its development since moderate activity boosts proper circulation.
Genes – Some people are born with weak muscles or with conditions that may encourage the development of hemorrhoids. As such, genetics is one of the known causes of hemorrhoids.
